London Rising Seminar 14th & 15th Sept 2018
A small group of us from Seishin Ju-Jitsu attended the long-anticipated “7th London Rising” Seminar in Luton, hosted by Hanshi Olu Bamgbose 9th Dan of Jiu-Jitsu International. The seminar took place over 2 days, and featured many esteemed and Internationally renowned Instructors, who had travelled from Ireland, Germany and all over England to be there, to impart their knowledge and years of experience in the following Japanese arts:
Kyūjutsu(弓術) “art of archery” – the traditional Japanese martial art of wielding a bow (yumi) as practiced by the samurai class of feudal Japan
Jiu-Jitsu (柔術) – the traditional Japanese martial art of close combat for defeating an armed and armored opponent in which one uses either a short weapon or none
Kenjutsu (剣術) “the method, technique or the art of the sword.” which originated with the samurai class of feudal Japan
Hojōjutsu (捕縄術) – the traditional Japanese martial art of restraining a person using cord or rope
Our little group mainly took part in the Kyujutsu Course under the tutelage of Sensei Graham Gosling 2nd Dan of Yamabushi Ryu (Ireland). Our intention was to try something new, holding no expectations other than to relax and have fun. And boy, did we ever?!
We met a lovely bunch of people, learned new skills, experienced battlefield formations, and shot arrows at challenging different targets, from challenging and varied positions. We also learned some new Japanese words, made some new friends, and just had the most amazing time!
We were also extremely humbled and honoured to be invited back on the second day to grade in the art of Kyujutsu to the beginner’s level of yellow belt, under the watchful eye of the main men in the art: Senseis Dirk Fromm (Germany) and Larry McEnroe (Ireland) of Yamabushi Ryu Kyujutsu.
The experience was amazing, the grading totally unexpected, and we thank them all; Organisers, Instructors and Participants, for making us feel so welcome and also for their guidance, tuition, support and encouragement. So, until next time, Sayonara!
