1st International Budo Seminar 2019
Over the weekend of 7th and 8th September 2019, Seishin Ju-Jitsu were honoured to attend the inaugural International Budo Seminar in The Netherlands.
The event brought together martial artists from different countries, disciplines and backgrounds for an unforgettable weekend of learning, friendship and traditional Budo.
The seminar had been many months in the planning and the excitement was evident long before we arrived. Hosted by Shihan Bob Walker 6th Dan, the weekend featured instruction from an outstanding team of experienced martial artists, including Kyoshi Gary Maas 7th Dan, Renshi John Michell 5th Dan, and Renshi Kyle Burks 5th Dan. Each instructor brought their own knowledge, teaching style and decades of practical experience, making the seminar both educational and thoroughly enjoyable.

Over the two days, participants enjoyed training in an impressive range of martial arts and traditional weapons systems. Sessions included Iaido, Kendo, Tai Ki Kendo, Escrima, traditional Japanese archery, pressure point applications, knife defence, knife attack scenarios, walking cane techniques, Kubotan, Aikido and Ju-Jitsu. Whether students were experienced practitioners or simply trying a new discipline for the first time, every class offered something valuable to take home.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the weekend was the friendly archery competition. Competitors tested their accuracy and composure in several challenging events, with some excellent prizes on offer. We were delighted that our own Renshi John Michell won the Gold Medal in the "Pressure Shooting" competition, successfully bursting a balloon at an impressive distance of 25 metres using just a single arrow. Fellow Seishin student Sui also performed brilliantly, earning the award for Best Shooter within his team.
The seminar itself was exceptionally well organised, with every detail carefully planned to ensure the weekend ran smoothly. The instruction was of the highest quality, delivered with professionalism, enthusiasm and plenty of humour, creating a relaxed learning environment where everyone could enjoy themselves while developing new skills.
Beyond the training, the hospitality shown by our Dutch hosts made the weekend even more memorable. We would like to thank everyone who generously gave up their time to transport us between venues, show us around the local area and make us feel so welcome throughout our stay. It is these personal touches that turn a great seminar into an unforgettable experience.
Special thanks also go to Kyoshi Gary Maas and Renshi Kyle Burks for transporting all of our equipment to the Netherlands - no small task! We are equally grateful to our host Shihan Bob Walker, Sempai Inge, and to Sophie Walker and Laura Walker, who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to capture countless photographs and videos while ensuring everyone enjoyed their visit.
The 1st International Budo Seminar perfectly demonstrated the true spirit of martial arts: friendship, mutual respect, continuous learning and the sharing of knowledge. Our extended Budo family now stretches across the North Sea, and we look forward to renewing those friendships at future seminars.
