2024 MMA Seminar
North London with Kyoshi Jason Fitzpatrick
The 2024 North London MMA Seminar brought together a strong team of respected martial artists for a practical, open-minded training event focused on real-world self-defence, movement, timing and cross-style learning.
Led by Kyoshi Jason Fitzpatrick, a highly respected 7th Dan Goshin Ju-Jitsu instructor, the seminar continued the popular multi-style training format enjoyed by many North London martial arts clubs. Jason was joined by senior regional instructors including Professor Nick Charalambous, 8th Dan Ju-Jitsu, and Grandmaster Sifu Andrew Sofos of SAS Martial Arts Academy.

The event was supported by local martial arts groups including Seishin Ju-Jitsu in Southgate and the Goshin Ju-Jitsu Association GB London.
These clubs have helped build a friendly training community where students from different backgrounds can come together, share ideas and learn from one another.
The main focus of the seminar was practical self-defence. Students explored how traditional Ju-Jitsu principles can be adapted for modern situations, including balance breaking, body movement, joint control, escapes, striking entries and close-range defence. Rather than treating styles as separate systems, the seminar showed how Ju-Jitsu, Kung Fu and combat-sport concepts can work together when applied with correct timing and understanding.
One of the key strengths of the event was its accessibility. The seminar was open to all levels, from complete beginners to experienced black belts. Everyone trained in a respectful and supportive environment, with senior instructors helping students understand not only what techniques to use, but why they work.
Training included work on distance, angles, leverage and control. Students practised using footwork to manage range, taking opponents off-balance through movement rather than strength, and linking traditional techniques into more fluid self-defence combinations. This made the seminar especially useful for martial artists wanting to broaden their knowledge beyond their usual syllabus.
The 2024 North London MMA Seminar was another excellent example of how martial arts communities can collaborate. By bringing together instructors from different disciplines and associations, the event encouraged open learning, mutual respect and practical development for everyone who stepped onto the mat.
