2024 - Gathering of the Masters

The 2024 Shuren Bash was another excellent example of martial artists coming together in the true spirit of friendship, learning and respect. Hosted by Shuren Ryu Martial Arts in association with the International Kenpo Jutsu Alliance, the event has become known as a popular open-style seminar and ?Gathering of the Masters?.

Usually held in London during the spring, the Shuren Bash welcomes students and instructors from a wide range of martial arts backgrounds. These include Kempo, Ju-Jitsu, Karate, self-defence systems and other traditional and modern combat arts.

The aim of the day is not competition, grading or politics, but shared learning.

One of the strongest messages behind the Shuren Bash is that grades are left outside the door. Whether someone is a beginner, a coloured belt, a senior black belt or an experienced instructor, everyone steps onto the mat as a student.

This creates a friendly, ego-free environment where people can train openly, ask questions and explore techniques without barriers.

The event is closely associated with Hanshi Keith Moughton of Shuren Ryu Martial Arts, who has helped build the Bash into a respected international martial arts gathering. The International Kenpo Jutsu Alliance page also notes that the Bash has links with senior instructors from London, Dublin and Derry, including Masters John Ward and Dessie McMenamin. These events often bring together instructors from the UK, Ireland and beyond.

The training format is usually practical and varied. Students may move between different instructors, each offering their own approach to movement, balance, striking, locking, control, throws and self-defence. This makes the seminar especially valuable for martial artists who want to experience how different systems solve similar problems.

Another important part of the Shuren Bash is its charitable purpose. The day is not only about training; it is also about giving something back. Proceeds from the event are traditionally donated to charity, reflecting the martial arts values of service, humility and community spirit.
