Hatfield Hatfield Seminar

Welham Martial Arts Club 2025

In 2025, members of Seishin Ju-Jitsu were pleased to attend the annual Hatfield Martial Arts Seminar hosted by Welham Martial Arts Club. The event brought together martial artists from across Hertfordshire and beyond for a day dedicated to practical Japanese Ju-Jitsu, realistic self-defence and the sharing of knowledge between clubs.

Welham Martial Arts has earned an excellent reputation for organising friendly, informative seminars that welcome practitioners of all grades and backgrounds. Rather than concentrating on flashy techniques or competition, the focus remained firmly on understanding the principles that make traditional Ju-Jitsu effective in real-life situations.

Seminar Highlights

  • Head instruction from Hanshi Ken Culshaw.
  • Guest instruction from Sensei Sue King and other senior instructors.
  • Practical Japanese Ju-Jitsu and self-defence applications.
  • Training suitable for students of every grade and experience.
  • Excellent opportunity to train with martial artists from different clubs.
  • Strong emphasis on respect, safety and technical precision.

Learning from Hanshi Ken Culshaw

The seminar was led by Hanshi Ken Culshaw, whose decades of experience in traditional martial arts have made him one of the most respected instructors in the UK. His teaching style combines practical application with detailed technical explanation, enabling students to understand not only how techniques are performed, but the principles that make them successful.

Throughout the day, Hanshi Culshaw demonstrated how correct posture, balance, timing and body movement allow techniques to work efficiently without relying on strength or speed alone. By breaking techniques down into simple, logical stages, students gained a deeper appreciation of the mechanics behind effective Ju-Jitsu.

Expert Guest Instruction

Supporting the day's programme was Sensei Sue King, whose approachable teaching style and extensive experience added another valuable perspective to the seminar. Working alongside Hanshi Culshaw, she demonstrated practical applications that highlighted precision, control and the importance of adapting techniques to different situations.

The seminar also welcomed experienced instructors and students from several martial arts clubs, creating an open and friendly training environment where everyone was encouraged to learn from one another regardless of association or grade.

Representing Seishin Ju-Jitsu

Members of Seishin Ju-Jitsu thoroughly enjoyed another outstanding seminar hosted by Welham Martial Arts Club. Training alongside martial artists from different organisations continues to broaden technical knowledge, build lasting friendships and reinforce the values that unite the martial arts community.

Our sincere thanks go to Hanshi Ken Culshaw, Sensei Sue King, the instructors, assistants and everyone at Welham Martial Ars Club for organising another exceptional event. We look forward to returning to Hatfield for future seminars and continuing to learn from such experienced and generous martial artists.
